When I am not working directly from observation (disabling factors include weather, and practical issues such as inconvenient vantage points. In Kuwait social issues also play a part in my decision to work in the studio.) I like using video references for several reasons- the first is that a video helps to jog my memory for the feel of a place aswell as its look. A video also gives me more choice of reference material than a static photograph. Also, the level of detail in my videos isnt very high, so I need to really look at the subjects aswell, rather than just rely on the secondary images.
